Some dinners are quick, and some dinners are an event. A hotpot dinner is firmly in the second category. There is a big pot in the middle of the table, red broth bubbling like a tiny volcano, and a mountain of plates waiting to be dipped, swished and enjoyed. Nobody ever says this will be a short evening.
This clip follows one such dinner from the first order to the last toast. It starts with a smartphone screen showing a long menu of dishes, each with a little photo and a number, and a thumb sliding down the list with serious concentration. Fish head, dumplings, tofu, noodles: a feast is being planned like a military operation.
Soon the food arrives, and our hero in a turquoise polka-dot top picks up her chopsticks. She stirs a deep blue-and-white bowl full of dark, glossy dipping sauce, tastes a bite and gives her opinion in two words and an enormous smile. The verdict is clear: delicious, and maybe a little spicy.
Then the ritual begins. Somebody raises a small glass, somebody else raises one too, and before long the table has entered the glorious zone of friendly toasts. There is a toast to the food, a toast to the weather, a toast to the friend who found the restaurant. Every sentence ends with a clinking sound, and every clink seems to bring another reason for the next one.
The setting is the perfect backdrop. Strings of warm lights glow overhead, a glass fish tank gleams in the corner and the street beyond is full of passing scooters and chatter. At one point, a friend in a light shirt leans in, says something that sounds like a challenge and everybody bursts into laughter. The evening is in full swing.
Of course, a good host also keeps an eye on the limits. Water, tea and snacks help, and a smart diner always remembers that the best part of a toast marathon is the conversation, not the count. The captions on screen even remind viewers to enjoy responsibly, which is a very nice touch.
By the end of the night, the pot is half empty, the glasses are all lined up like soldiers and the group has solved at least four of the world’s biggest problems and invented two new jokes. The last toast is a quiet one, to the next dinner.
So why does every hotpot dinner turn into a toast marathon? Because good food invites good company, good company invites good stories and good stories always deserve one more clink.
